At the same time as we moved to the Czech Republic, my parents moved to New Mexico. We flew from Munich, Germany (a 3 hour drive from our house in CZ) to Albuquerque, NM to stay for a week with my parents. Jet lag aside, we had a wonderful time. It was so great to see my parents and for the kids to hang out with granma and pop. When we walked through the door of their house and hugs had been given and welcomes said the first thing we did was raid the fridge. That first taste of roast beef, the first swig of A&W rootbeer and the first crunch of Wheat Thins crackers was heavenly. Amazing how many simple things, once taken for granted, become like nectar of the gods when forced deprivation occurs. My dad had the whole week off so he showed us around town and toted us everywhere in his tiny car that we dubbed "the Easy Bake Oven" due to its astounding ability to conduct heat (particularly in the back seat where I was shoved with both girls whilst my dad and Dan often complained about how cold the AC was up in front...drat those boys!) New Mexico is beautiful. My parents live in the high desert, maybe 5,000 feet elevation and the weather was hot and dry. This was the place where we experienced our firsts back in the States...first time at Walmart, Target, first unlimited refill drink and grab your own ketchup packets (as many as you like...for FREE!!!)
