Contrary to popular belief, the central coast of California is not a sweltering desert nor a tropical paradise. While completely breathtaking in its own right, during the summer most days lurks a blanket of fog which covers the whole coast. When the sun does peek out over the sandy beaches there is much rejoicing (cue minstrels). And, again, contrary to popular opinion, we did not have much time while we were in America to go to the beach. Most of the time we were in the Central Valley (no ocean, only icky public pool). On this day pictured above, we had planned to be in Carmel and while away the day at the beach. Unfortunately, the fog just wouldn't leave causing the ocean to appear gray and murky and a cold, stiff wind to blow. From this ensued a general chilliness that would not abate. My kids were brave enough to fling their bodies into the freezing waters bolstered by an ocean sensory deprivation due to living in landlocked Czech Republic. Our friends and I chose to stay safely on the beach. Soon after these pictures were taken we abandoned our efforts and went shopping in temperature-controlled malls. Enough of this nature business!
