life in this republic
I can't believe I have to even say that!
I have posted a picture of one of my favorite classes that I teach. They are 8th graders and I really enjoy them. They are funny, smart and kind to me. They work hard and I truly look forward to teaching them each week. This past week we played a game instead of having our regular lesson on boring adverbs. The game was of the sort where you bet on how many words you could come up with compared to your opposing team. Guys against girls. The race was on! Who would win? Which team could name more animals? Foods? Colors? Jobs? It was obvious that the girls (being, of course, the more intelligent gender :D) were going to win the day so the boys started getting desperate. I was standing closer to the boys table and one leaned over to me and asked if they could write "b*tch" on the list of jobs. Words that I thought I would never have to string together to form a sentence came out of my mouth. "No, "b*tch" is not a job", I said. Moments later, another young man whispered to me asking if he could write "s*!#" on the list of foods. Again, I uttered a sentence that minutes ago I wouldn't have believed was possible. "No, "s*#$" is not a food". His reply, "Well, everything can be eaten." Following that, I put my head down on the desk for a little "me" time.
