life in this republic
safety first

While wandering around in Prague on our way to our fave Mexican restaurant we were crossing on a crosswalk through an intersection. Hearing first the siren then seeing the ambulance hurtling towards us motivated us to run like crazies and fling ourselves onto the curb. The ambulance would have hit us. It would have. I felt it slam into the emptiness my body had just occupied. I appreciate that it needs to get to where it's going and fast, but risking causing more damage on the way? Our hearts were racing and we laughed in that semi-hysterical way one laughs when cheating death. This is not an isolated incident. Things in the Czech Republic are not hermetically sealed for your safety. "At your own risk" is assumed and that applies for crossing at intersections or when stepping out of your house. People here don't sue very often so there is no incentive to make things safer. If you tripped on a cracked piece of sidewalk in America perhaps you coud sue the city because of your injuries. Here in CZ they would laugh and tell you to learn how to walk right.
