Sprechen Sie Deutsch?
Thinking that most of the students in my new class will be Czech and will not speak any English does not daunt me in the least. I can help them transition into an English-only environment rather quickly and I can comfort them if they are scared and introduce them to the class rules and procedures because I speak Czech. Yesterday, however, I found out that about a third of my students will be German-only speakers. WOW. I speak no German save for a few swear words and a useful phrase calling someone a "diarrhea face". Even though this will be an English-only environment, I really feel like I need to pick up some German to be able to help "the littles" (my new nickname for my kids)feel comfortable and not afraid. My husband speaks some German and Rebekah has taken it this year and did really well and they will be tutoring me so that I can be prepared for the first day of school. It is very important to me that "the littles" feel OK. As far as communicating with the parents...Czech parents, no problem. Even though my Czech is by no means perfect, I can fully communicate in Czech. I just hope the German parents speak English or I will be pantomiming like an idiot.
