life in this republic
wha???

I am currently in the throes of mid-terms, end of semester grades, meetings and other assorted school related stress. All of my students have been furiously working on homework, studying for tests and honing their skills of persuasion and begging in order to secure a desirable grade. I, on the other hand, have been grading mountains of papers, going through lots of red ink, and preparing myself daily to be surrounded by dozens of Czech children and teens pleading their case in a language I barely uunderstand. Normally, I enjoy grading their work. Often it is a source of entertainment for me and my family. Please don't get me wrong. I never make fun of my students' English. I know first-hand what that feels like as I live on that side of the tracks every day here. My self-esteem takes a hit every time I open my mouth. Having said that, I feel entitled to enjoy a good chuckle every now and then when a student inadvertantly turns a phrase ever so...fantastically.

This past week I was curled up on the couch grading some homework that was turned in by my 8th grade English conversation class. Their assignment was to come up with interview questions regarding hobbies. One of my favorite questions written was, "What is your favorite camel?"...This provided many minutes of appreciative giggling for both Danny and me.

Ahhh. sometimes I just love my job...
