Advent and Asparagus
Today the snow is softly falling. Huge flakes gently float toward the earth silently landing on ever-growing mounds of white. We sat in church today, a new church for us as we were visiting a friend's congregation. The worship band played Christmas carols on acoustic guitars and saxophone while I gazed out the window enjoying the soft gray light while the wind choreographed a dance of feathery white snowflakes. Today is an important day. Our good friend was baptized in church today. She stood before all of us to proclaim that Jesus is her Savior. What an appropriate way to celebrate Advent this Sunday. Jesus was born in Bethlehem to die on Cavalry so my friend could stand before us forgiven, washed white as snow, a new creation, alive in Christ. Born to die so that we may live. Thank you so much, my Lord, my Savior, my Friend, my Jesus!
As a side note...visitors are introduced to the congregation during the service. I was unprepared for this and totally embarrassed. I explained to the congregation that we are Americans and that is why I speak Czech so badly. I also explained that we were there because our friend was getting baptized. Unfortunately, the word for baptism (křest) is almost the same as the word for asparagus (chřest). So, I really have no idea what I said...
